Mysuru: The Mysuru zoo is adding to its already large animal family with the addition of an Himalayan Black Bear from the Lady Hydari Park Animal Land in Shillong, Meghalaya and one male and one female leopard cat, two male and two female Great White Pelicans from the Assam state zoo. In all, the zoo plans to add 17 more animals to its many attractions. The Central Zoo Authority has already given its approval for the proposal and the animals will arrive at the zoo shortly, according to Mysuru zoo executive director, C Ravishankar.
The new additions will include one male and one female Brahminy Shell Duck, two male and two female Barking Deer, one male and one female four horned antelope, and one male and female brow antlered deer. In exchange, Mysuru zoo intends to spare one male Bengal Tiger, one male and one female Black Buck and two female Common Peafowl for the Assam zoo.
"There are also proposals to get Red-necked Wallabies, Black -necked Swan, Common Marmoset, Ring tail Lamur, Bat- eared fox, Meer cats, Jaquar, a cheetah and chimpanzees from the Tohoku zoo in Japan, an anaconda from the Srilanka zoo, a zebra from the Israel zoo and a chimpanzee from Nandan Kanan in Orissa. A few approvals are pending with the Central Zoo Authority and a few with the Union government.. While animals from zoos in the country will arrive shortly, those from abroad will take a while to arrive," Mr Ravishankar said. Mysuru zoo currently has 1521 animals of 154 species.
