Rare leatherback turtle spotted off Visakhapatnam coast

Species of marine turtles namely-Green, Olive Ridly and few others were seen in India.

Visakhapatnam: A rare leatherback turtle (Dermochelys Coriacea) that accidentally enmeshed in fishing net at Mutyalammapalem under Parawada mandal in Vizag district on Saturday.

The fishermen said that they got a rare glimpse of a seven-foot-long and weighs about 200 kgs turtle. This is the first occasion in the region when a leatherback turtle was seen in the region. Locals of Mutyalammapalem and surrounding areas have thronged to the beach to see the rare turtle.

According to reports, fishermen M Sagar and his team was taken aback when they looked into the net and found a live turtle. Following the information, R.V.D. Prabhakar, technical officer of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, visited the spot and declared that the turtle is leatherback, the world’s most endangered sea turtle.
