Mysuru: Mighty Shankar will no longer roar
Mysuru: An eight-year-old male Asiatic lion, Shankar, died at Mysuru Zoo on Monday evening. The lion was said to be suffering from liver and kidney problems. Shankar was brought to Mysore Zoo from Sakkarbaugh Zoo in Junagadh on March 6, 2011.
The zoo now has only three lions. Zoo Executive Director Venkatesan S. said that Shankar fell ill on April 30.
He said that blood tests revealed that Shankar was suffering from liver and kidney problems, and it was treated under the guidance of Prof C. Ansar Kamran from the Department of Medicine, Veterinary College, Hassan.
Bird flu scare
Meanwhile, zoo authorities have taken precautionary measures in wake of outbreak of bird flu in parts of the state.
All birds in the zoo have been given medication. Fecal samples have been sent for tests. “We have stopped procuring live fowls and eggs from the market for zoo animals,” Mr Venkatesan said.
