Over 1,500 students get ready for rain walk in Kerala

Mazhayatra' is to be held at Kuttiady on Saturday.

KOZHIKODE: Over thousand students will walk together in the rain at Western Ghats section in Kuttiady on Saturday to better understand the nature by enjoying its bounty.

The ‘mazhayatra’ (rain walk) organized by the Students’ Army for Vadakara Environment (SAVE) is being conducted for the fourth time. Usually the Yatra, conducting in the second Saturday of June, was shifted to July after the lack of rain during the walks in last two years.

The walk, conducted in association with OISCA Kuttiady chapter, had seen huge participation in its previous editions. Apart from students, teachers, people’s representatives, cultural activists, environmentalists and public will join in the walk.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, SAVE coordinator Narayanan Vadakkekandi said that the Walk has been one of the major environmental initiatives in the district with more than thousand students participating every year.

“We are expecting over 1500 students representing 150 schools this year. The yatra in its previous editions have helped the students to reinvent the nature and also experience rain,” he said.

“The Yatra, starts from Valamthode Check Post at 9 am will end at A.J John Memorial High School. Best school and travelogues from students and teachers will get prizes.
