30 drunken seagulls baffle vets treating them at RSPCA centre

One theory doing the rounds is that the birds must have downed beer left on beachfronts.

A colony of 30 seagulls, all drunk, have left veterinarians at an RSPCA centre baffled.

The veterinarians have been treating them for two weeks.

One theory doing the rounds is that the birds must have downed beer left on beachfronts.

Firefighters were called to one gull behaving erratically on a roof before falling off in Lyme Regis, Dorset.

Watch manager Virgil Turner said: “I caught him and he threw up all over me. He reeked of beer.”

All the boozed-up birds were taken to a centre at West Hatch near Taunton, Somerset.

According to vet David Couper , some were found unconscious or staggering and all were reeking of alcohol.

“They looked terrible. Some have been so poorly they’ve died,” he added.

“We had a couple of isolated cases last year. But this year there has been a spate of cases from east Devon, Dorset and Somerset.”

Another theory is that they may have gained access to brewing waste products.
