Finally, Bannerghatta gets a giraffe!
Bengaluru: The Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) finally got a giraffe after it was donated by the Chamarajendra Zoological Garndens in Mysuru.
The two-and-a-half-year-old giraffe, Gowri, travelled over 200 km to reach the park on Tuesday evening. It was shifted in a specially designed, low-bed trailer vehicle with veterinarians, animal keepers and staff in tow.
A senior official form BBP said, “After going through many hurdles and delays, the animal was transported by road. It left the Mysuru Zoo around 12.30 pm on Tuesday.”
This will be the first giraffe at the park and is expected to be one of its major attractions. The BBP was trying to get a giraffe for over four years. Two staff members from BBP were sent to get necessary training and to get acclimatised with the animal.
Gowri is 13.5-feet tall and was born to Krishnaraja and Lakshmi at Mysuru Zoo on December 19, 2015. BBP Executive Director R. Gokul said, “A plain land of two-and-a-half acres near the BBP main entrance will be allocated to Gowri.”
Sharath Babu, a wildlife expert, said, “Gowri will be a single specimen, like many other animals at BBP. Socialisation will be an issue for such animals and they won’t be happy. Also, the giraffe eats from the tree as it can’t bend and eat. Hopefully that is taken care of.”
Visitors can see Gowri at the BBP from Wednesday.
