Hyderabad's ranking on Quality of Life index

Hyderabad: Hyderabad lags significantly behind other major Indian cities in terms of quality of life and human capital.

A report by Oxford Economics evaluates 8,000 global cities, ranking the top 1,000 based on scores in five categories: Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment, and Governance.

Hyderabad is ranked 564th overall, trailing behind other major Indian cities. Delhi is ranked 350th, Mumbai 427th, Bengaluru 411th, Chennai 472nd, Pune 534th, and Kolkata 528th. Notably, even smaller cities like Kochi and Thrissur are ranked higher at 521st and 550th, respectively.

In the 'Quality of Life' category, Hyderabad is ranked 882nd. This category assesses factors such as life expectancy, income per person, income equality, housing expenditure, recreational and cultural sites, and internet speed. Other major Indian cities with better rankings include Delhi (838th), Bengaluru (847th), and Chennai (879th). Kolkata and Pune are ranked 884th and 897th, respectively, while Mumbai is the lowest among them, at 915th.

The governance aspect of the report reflects the political stability of the entire country, resulting in the same score for all Indian cities, which is 380.

In terms of economics, the report evaluates the size and growth of GDP, per capita income, employment growth, economic stability, and diversity. Hyderabad is ranked 253rd in this category. Given the size and scale of their markets, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai have higher rankings than Hyderabad. Bengaluru and Chennai also fare better, ranking 171st and 244th, respectively. Pune, however, is ranked lower at 386th.

Hyderabad is way behind all metro cities when it comes to human capital. This category includes educational and professional opportunities, population growth and age profile. Delhi has been ranked 51st in this category. Hyderabad is at 524th.

In the environment category, Hyderabad performs relatively well, securing the 674th rank. It outpaces other major cities, with Delhi ranked the lowest at 973, followed by Kolkata at 919 and Mumbai at 812. Hyderabad also ranks higher than Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kochi.
