Quitting marijuana can improve memory within days: Study

The findings add to a growing body of evidence that drug's psychoactive chemical does impact and reduce a person's IQ.

A new study has found that quitting marijuana can boost memory within days, the Daily Mail reported.

The study included 88 male participants between the ages of 16 and 25 who smoked it at least once a week. Researchers had part of the group reduce how much they smoked, while the rest had to quit cold turkey.

Results showed those who quit completely fared far better in memory tests, than those who did not. Researchers saw the quitters only improved even after a month.

The findings add to a growing body of evidence that drug's psychoactive chemical does impact and reduce a person's IQ. However, saying no to these types of drugs can change that.

The Daily Mail quoted lead author clinical psychologist Dr Randi Schuster: "The ability to learn or 'map down' new information, which is a critical facet of success in the classroom, improved with sustained non use of cannabis.

"Young cannabis users who stop regular - weekly or more - use may be better equipped to learn efficiently and therefore better positioned for academic success.

"We can confidently say these findings strongly suggest abstaining from cannabis helps young people learn, while continuing cannabis use may interfere with the learning process."

The findings were originally published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.
