Popular 'dragon's breath' snacks can cause skin and internal organ damage

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about the dangers.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns trendy 'dragon's breath' snacks like ice creams, cocktails and cereals can cause skin and internal organ damage, the Daily Mail reported.

Consuming snacks and drinks that contain liquid nitrogen, which is used to cool or freeze foods, to get that 'dragon's breath' effect could be dangerous. A lot of teenagers have been attracted to the craze.

While nitrogen is safe to use to preserve food, it is so cold that it can damage the stomach and throat and even freeze the skin. The extreme cold can also effect internal tissues and damage the esophagus and lungs.

Recently, there have been an increasing number of reports of the dangers of consuming such foods.

The agency stated, according to the Daily Mail: "The FDA has become aware of severe - and in some cases, life-threatening - injuries, such as damage to skin and internal organs caused by liquid nitrogen still present in the food or drink. There has also been a report of difficulty breathing after inhaling the vapor released by liquid nitrogen when added immediately before consumption."

Adding, "This safety alert advises consumers to avoid eating, drinking, or handling foods prepared using liquid nitrogen at point of sale and immediately before consumption, due to risk of injury."
