Salem: Close on the heels of a rash of dengue fever cases in Salem district, an instance of suspected swine flu has raised public health concerns in the steel city. In a flurry of activity here, an 18-year-old youth Krishna Prasad, second year B. Tech student of a private Engineering college in Coimbatore, was admitted to the Mohan Kumaramangalam government hospital here with symptoms of ‘swine flu’.

The youth, son of one Soundappan of Maramanglathupatti village near here and an employee of the Salem steel plant, is being currently treated in the hospital's special ward, sources told DC on Sunday. Krishna Prasad had fallen ill with intermitted fever, cough and running nose when he had come home in Salem for Deepavali last week, sources said. He was immediately admitted to the hospital in the steel plant complex.

As a blood test there confirmed that Kishna Prasad was suffering from an attack of 'swine flu', he was then shifted to the Salem government hospital for intensive treatment, sources said, adding, to double confirm the disease, his blood sample has been rushed to the King Institute in Guindy in Chennai for further tests.
