US school replaces detention with meditation to help students correct mistakes

Punishment has been a reaction to children making mistakes for years and detention has been accepted as a norm.

Baltimore: Punishment has been a reaction to children making mistakes for years and detention has been accepted as a norm around the world with no one bothering to question if this tactic actually serves any real purpose or not.

But a school in Baltimore, US is finally breaking away from this system in order to make sure that school life manages to inculcate important values in children by correcting them and giving a direction instead of punishing them.

The school has replaced detention rooms with Mindful Moment Rooms where children meditate and practice breathing exercises. Children to commit mistakes are also encouraged to talk to professional behaviour analysts who counsel and help them.

Two years after the programme was started, not one suspension was started by the school, as scolding and humiliating students that could scar them for life has been replaced by sensible steps that inspire them to be better human beings.

Hopefully institutions across the world will also follow suit and embrace this innovative and highly productive system.
