World Liver Day: Untidy gyms can cause liver damage
Thrissur: There is possibility among those doing workouts in gymnasiums and swimming pools which are kept untidy ot contract viral hepatitis that can severely damage the liver, doctors here at Thrissur Medical College Hospital has warned.
They say that the investigation into hepatitis cases have found that five patients admitted to the MCH were found to have contacted the virus from the gyms.
The virus can enter the body through any puncture in the skin like cuts, burns and sores and travel through the blood to the liver, doctors said.
“In foreign countries gyms and pools are properly cleaned to prevent the spread of virus and they are properly monitored keeping the issue in mind. But in India, such places are not strictly monitored,” expert in liver disease at MCH here Y Praveen Kumar said.
In Kerala, The Non-alcoholic Steato Hepatitis (NASH) cases are reported highest in Thrissur and mostly women without proper physical activities are affected by it, he said. Mr Kumar was speaking at a free medical checkup for liver functioning at Banerji Club in Thrissur the other day. The event was organised in view of World Liver Day.
