Cosmetic gynaecology gains popularity

Costs Rs 2 lakh in India as against approximate Rs 10 lakh in foreign countries.

Chennai: Following her second delivery, 39-year-old Amrita (name changed) has been feeling very different physically. Not only did her body bloat up, but her vagina also felt extremely loose. However, due to societal reasons and the inability to travel abroad for a surgery, she decided to let it go.

To make matters simple for women like Amrita, Dr David Matlock, now a famous Cosmetic Gynaecologist of Beverly Hills, introduced the treatment, which slowly found its way to India, is starting off in Tamil Nadu.

“This recent breakthrough in the aesthetic field will help transform the female external genitalia appearance to look younger and more natural,” said Dr Deepa Ganesh of Lifeline Hospital, who was the first Indian to get certified in this field. “It involves a group of procedures that is cosmetic in nature and some medically necessary. They are performed to either improve the function or the appearance or both,” she added.

“There are a few doctors who are aware about the existence of this field. However, they are not very hopeful of its success in a state like Tamil Nadu,” said gynaecologist Dr Shanta. S.

With over six surgeries having been performed in the state, Dr Ganesh is of the hope that women will slowly become open to the idea of discussing their vaginal problems with doctors. “However, they are still apprehensive about society’s reaction to the same,” she stressed.

“I think it is the woman’s personal choice to make that decision for herself. If it is medically necessary, then there is no question about its requirement,” said Rachel K, a resident of Chennai. “As the vagina is also an important part of the body, its care is essential,” she added. This field will surely grow in Chennai as the crowd here is evolving into a more open-minded bunch, she opined.

“As a mother who has undergone natural birth with an episiotomy, it would feel great to have it cosmetically corrected,” said Divya George Desai, a staff nurse and a mother of a two-year-old.

The procedures, which would cost around Rs 2 lakh all together in India as against an approximate of Rs 10 lakh abroad, include designer labioplasty, designer perineoplasty, hoodoplasty (Clitoral Hood Reduction), labia majora reduction, labia majora augmentation, hymenoplasty (hymen restoration) mons liposculpturing and g- shot (G-Spot augmentation /Enhancement).

“The procedures could be really beneficial for the beautification and enrichment of an individual’s marital life. Post birth, a woman’s disfigured body could lead to psychological stress, thereby affecting the marriage,” said Sumi B, a mother of two children.
