Young women at risk after childbirth

Studies have shown that heart attacks in women are different from those in men.

Hyderabad: Heart attacks in younger women are seen after child birth or during hormonal changes. Studies have shown that heart attacks in women are different from those in men.

In men, heart attacks occur when the coronary arteries get clogged with cholesterol deposits over a period of time. But in women, it was found that there is a sudden tear in the artery and it simply falls apart.

Studies found that these are healthy, young women who suddenly suffer a heart attack. Dr A. Sreenivas Kumar, senior cardiologist, explained, “There is a lot of research going on to understand how women suffer from heart attacks. Eighty per cent of heart diseases are preventable. One has to take precautionary measures and work towards maintaining a healthy balance.”

All heart attacks are not necessarily accompanied by chest pain. In women patients, doctors see symptoms such as an overwhelming feeling of anxiety, shortness of breath, pain in the neck, arm and jaw, which is present for a month before a major heart attack.

It is important for women to get evaluated from time to time as changes in their lifestyle have also made them susceptible to the disease.
