Heart failure among elderly people will triple by 2060: study

The largest increase in heart failures will be among people in the 70 to 79 age group and mostly among women.

Hear failure is a major health issue for people beyond a certain age and while efforts are being made to promote a healthier lifestyle, a study suggests that the situation is only set to get worse in coming years.

Ragnar Danielsan, Cardiologist at Landspitali University Hospital, in Iceland said, "Heart failure is a common condition worldwide and increases with age. Various disorders can cause heart failure, such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, obesity and diabetes. As these are more prevalent with age, the consequence is an increased population of elderly who may develop heart failure."

According to a study published in the journal European Society of Cardiology, heart failure among people aged beyond 60 years will triple by 2060. The conclusion came from observing 5,706 elderly participants.

The researchers then analysed data on current size, sex and age distribution, and assessed prevalence of heart failure among the elderly to predict the number of elderly people to have heart failure in future.

The largest increase in heart failures will be among people in the 70 to 79 age group and mostly among women.
