Two Navodaya students hit by Malaria

The district health authorities found that two of them had a relapse.

MALAPPURAM: Malaria has been found in two students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Oorakam near Vengara in the district. Both the 10th standard students were infected with Malaria from Allahabad where they were sent as part of the migration scheme of the school. Six of the 18 students who returned from Allahabad in April after a year's programme had Malaria but were cured after treatment.

However, the district health authorities found that two of them had a relapse. The two students who hail from Nilambur and Perinthalmanna are undergoing treatment at private hospitals. Following the latest infection, the health department has conducted a health check-up for all the students of the school. The hostel rooms and premises were cleaned up.

"The students were infected from a malaria endemic area in north India. A team of the vector controlling unit conducted a survey in the school and hostel premises on Thursday to track the Anopheles mosquitoes. Further measures to prevent the spread of the disease are underway," said Mr B.S Anilkumar, District Malaria Officer.
