Greek village's unique genetic makeup protects them against deadly heart diseases
Everybody has a deficiency that makes them vulnerable to different diseases and while cancer affects a lot of people, heart diseases too are very common and maybe difficult to prevent. A Greek village however has the cure to heart diseases and it is in their genes because of which they are protected from any kind of ailments related to the heart.
According to a media report, the isolated Greek villages of Zoniana and Anogia live longer lives because of their unique genetic makeup. The residents of northern Crete have gene variants that make them immune to heart diseases baffling scientists. The variant lowers the level of ‘bad’ fats and cholesterol that is not found in people anywhere in the world.
Interestingly, the villagers suffered from type-II diabetes like the general Greek population but did not have complications that would harm their health. The variant called rs145556679* which was previously not known to have the protective abilities is going to be used by scientists to treat heart ailments in the future.
