Pregnancy: Care for two
Pregnancy is a very crucial phase in a woman’s life. It requires a lot of care to ensure that the term is completed successfully. There are small but important factors which must not be undermined so that it can protect the mother and the baby from an untoward incident. Senior gynaecologist Dr Bhavana Kasu shares few tips.
Do not use Hair dyes
The high doses of chemicals and ammonia in hair dyes can cause harm. Avoid it during pregnancy as the dye on the scalp can get absorbed in the blood stream and can have adverse effect on the health of the baby in the womb.
Seek immediate medical attention in case of infections
Vaginal, respiratory and urinary infections are common during pregnancy and it is important to consult the doctors and opt for proper treatment. Maintain good hygiene, drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day.
Do not use steroids
Do not self-medicate or use steroids as it may have an adverse effect on the baby.
Avoid sitting cross legged
Sit straight with the right posture during the three trimesters.
Identify warning signs
If you experience pain or burning sensation in the urine, severe, persistent or frequent headaches, vaginal discharge that is unusual and vaginal bleeding, consult your doctor immediately.
Check for swelling in hands, feet and face
These are an indication of water retention and it requires getting the blood pressure checked regularly and also going low on salt.
Avoid raw
Do not eat raw fish, meat or eggs. Cook properly.
Travel right
It is safe to travel in the first eight months of pregnancy but only after consultation with the gynaecologist.
Do not use medications
Ones with multiple ingredients or combination medicines can have adverse reactions. Check with your doctor before consuming.
