Medical negligence: Woman turns critical after fertility surgery
Hyderabad: A 36-year-old housewife who was treated at a fertility clinic in Nagole has become critically ill after a minor surgery. The housewife, Sai Jyothi’s, husband Dr Suman Kalyan alleged that doctors at the fertility clinic administered an overdose of anaesthesia before the surgery. Police registered a case against five doctors of Srujana Fertility Clinic. The couple Sai Jyothi, 36, and Dr Suman Kalyan, a government doctor, from Choutuppal, got married in 2007. They do not have any children. Eight months ago they approached the Srujana Fertility Clinic for treatment.
The doctors who examined Sai Jyothi said she can bear children after a minor surgical process and prescribed medication to prepare her for it. Dr Suman said the surgical process was scheduled for September 12 and Sai Jyothi was administered anaesthesia. After that she became unconscious and did not respond. She was rushed to the nearby Omni Hospital, which refused to admit the patient. After that she was rushed to Kamineni Hospital in LB Nagar on September 13.
However, there was no improvement in Sai Jyothi’s condition. Sai Jyothi has been suffering from epileptic seizures and is on ventilator since then. “Even after two weeks of treatment there is no improvement in her condition,” said Dr Suman Kalyan. He lodged a complaint against Srujana Fertility Clinic and doctors at the Chaitanya-puri police station. “Due to the ignorance and incompetence of the doctors my wife is now on ventilator and is battling for life. We went to the hospital for fertility treatment but now my wife is unconscious,” Dr Suman Kalyan said.
Police registered a case against doctors Srujana, Rani, Vittal, Srikanth and Swapna and started investigation. “We have seized Sai Jyothi’s medical records and will forward it to the district health officer for inquiry. Based on the report we will take action,” Chaitanyapuri inspector G. Guru Raghavendra said.
