A rare condition has left a 23-year-old Croatian man looking a decade younger than his real age. Tomislav Jurcec's condition has left him trapped in a child's body, the Daily Mail reports. For most people his age, buying a pack of cigarettes is no problem, but for Jurcec it is a challenge.
Jurcec "has a fault in his pituitary gland at the base of his brain, which controls growth and ageing," according to the report. This pea size gland is found behind the nose’s bridge and below the base of the brain. Hormones growth and puberty hormones are realised from this gland to the blood stream.
Jurcec, an IT worker is not the only one known to live with the condition, the report revealed. A Chinese girl named Zeng Yushan who was born in 1994 stopped growing at the age of seven. Doctors diagnosed her with a tumour on her pituitary gland which caused her to be deficient in growth hormones. These tumours can stop individuals from ageing.
How does it stop growth? The tumour stops growth hormones from being released, Ashley Grossman, professor of endocrinology at Oxford University told the Daily Mail. Loosing growth hormones can also lead to loss of other hormones. Individual with the condition do not go through puberty and can have side effects like hair loss. To help treat the condition artificial growth hormones have been developed and have to be injected into the body once daily.
This type of tumour is very rare as only one in 1000 adults have it, the report stated. Sometimes a gene defect or a faulty one can also be a contributing factor.
Jurcec has not let the condition affect his life. His diminutive size has helped gain work as a part-time actor. He even landed a role in the highly successful TV show Game of Thrones. Jurcec has been a stand-in for actor Peter Dinklage on the show who plays the dwarf Tyrion Lannist....
