Watch: Breast cancer awareness ad uses man boobs to evade censorship

A health campaign called #ManBoobs4Boobs cleverly tackles the problem of female nipple censorship.

It is quite ironic that in this day and age when women’s bodies are so sexualised in the media and nudity has become commonplace in pop culture, there are still strange censorship laws that can prevent women from accessing vital information regarding their health. MACMA, an Argentinean breast cancer charity along with a creative agency called DAVID cleverly sidestepped censorship laws by using a bare-chested overweight man to show a demo on how to do a self breast examination.

They also devised a health campaign with a humorously catchy hash tag - #ManBoobs4Boobs – to tackle the problem of female nipple censorship. Major social media platforms have a policy to take down images and videos that show a woman’s nipples even if it is to create awareness about a serious health condition although some do make exceptions if the content shows post-mastectomy scarring and breastfeeding.

The video shows a topless woman standing behind the shirtless man she’s performing the checks on. It advises that self breast examinations, regular visits to the gynaecologist and getting mammograms help in detecting breast cancer at an early stage before adding that men, too, can develop breast cancer.
