Rare condition causes boy in China to be born with no eyes
A mother in Guangzhou, China, has been left shattered after she discovered that her newborn son has little or no eye tissue, according to a People's Daily Online report. The congenital condition, known as Anophthalmia, affects 30 in every 10,000 children and renders the baby blind for life.
The boy’s mother, named Liu Peihua, delivered him on September 20 and is now in discussions with specialists at a big hospital in Guangzhou to get a complete check-up of her child. Mainstream Chinese media has even dubbed the infant ‘the baby with no eyes’. Currently, there is no treatment for Anophthalmia even though some children have artificial eyes surgically fitted to enable the bones around the eyes to grow naturally.
Peihua's family claims that the mother had undergone every antenatal check and was not warned about any potential complications. Moreover, Anophtalmia cannot be detected in ultrasounds and tests during pregnancy. The family now hopes to get financial assistance from several charities in order to secure the boy's future.
