Doctor invents make-up to protect people from acid attacks

In recent years, acid attacks have been on the rise.

A doctor has recently created acid-proof make-up to protect people from acid attacks, the Daily Mail reported.

Acid attack victim and Strictly Come Dancing contestant, Katie Piper, inspired 32-year-old Dr Almas Ahmed to come up with the invention

Dr Ahmed told the Daily Mail: "The idea first came about when I was in university and heard about Katie Piper on the news.

"It was really heartbreaking and I remember discussing it with my sister.

"She was aware that it's actually quite a problem in Asian countries, she told me more about it, so I started developing this product.

"It's basically just a foundation, it looks, feels, smells, works just like regular make-up, but it's completely heat-proof and acid-proof."

The chemical invented is to help protect from acid burns. Right now it has been put in foundation cream. Dr Ahmed hopes to soon add it to moisturiser and sun cream as well.

The product has a high heat resistance and cannot be melted by temperatures up to 400°C.

Currently, her creation is being tested in India. Once the trials are completed she hopes to get approval from the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

In recent years, acid attacks have been on the rise. In the UK 2016 saw close to 450 cases in London.
