Kerala: Sandhya gets a unique visitor

Mathew Achadan was first person to get air-lifted heart

KOCHI: It was a happy and unique moment for all those who were present there. Mathew Achadan, the first person in the state who got a second life after receiving an airlifted heart came to visit Sandhya Pramod, who was saved through a similar organ donation, at Lisie hospital on Monday. Achadan visited the hospital on the first anniversary of his historic heart transplant surgery.

He wished Sandhya a speedy recovery and good health. Eminent cardiac surgeon Dr. Jose Chacko Periyapuram and his team of doctors and nurses, hospital director Fr. Thomas Vaikkathuparambil received Mr. Achadan. It was on July 24, 2015 that he underwent heart transplant.

He received the heart of Neelakandha Sarma, who died in Thiruvananthapuram's Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences. The organ was flown to Kochi in a special Naval aircraft. 27-year old Sandhya received the heart of Vishal, who died in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The organ was airlifted to Kochi in a special Dornier aircraft of the Navy.
