Telangana: Audit says inferior drugs cause of maternal deaths
Hyderabad: The increasing number of maternal deaths in government hospitals in the state has compelled the Telangana State Medical Services Infrastructure Development Corporation to recall drugs such as saline, oxytocin injections and other drugs used in emergency situations because they are suspected of being sub-standard.
The report of the audit committee has in fact stated that ‘sub-standard drugs are leading to maternal deaths’.
The report has been sent to the government. On Tuesday afternoon, TSMSIDC officials removed a batch of saline bottles and drugs from all the three government maternity hospitals and took them for testing. This was done without the knowledge of the hospital superintendent.
A senior government doctor on condition of anonymity said, “Even basic drugs are not found to be of good quality according to the audit report. This has caused panic and the corporation is now taking samples for testing purposes to ascertain the quality.”
With a hue and cry being raised over the number of maternal deaths, the director of health and medical education, Dr M Ramani, has also called for a meeting with all retired gynaecologists to look at means and methods to control the situation.
