Scientists are close to developing a pill that gives people the benefits of physical activity without breaking sweat. They have managed to do so by identifying a key protein in the body that is released during workouts.

Named as Piezo 1, researchers say that the drug makes the body think that it is exercising which increases blood flow to the brain and muscles.

The pill, scientists claim, acts as an ‘exercise sensor’, boosting blood flow to the brain and muscle to sustain activity. The pill, it turnsout, also restricts the amount pumped into the stomach and intestines.

According to experts, the changes may be partly responsible for benefits of exercise, such as lower risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer.

The study has been conducted by the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine.

According to the team which conducted the study, protein’s release in humans could be triggered by a pill containing a known compound named Yoda 1 — after the Star Wars Jedi master.

Speaking to The Sun, lead author of the study, Professor David Beech, said that it may be by understanding the working of Yoda 1 that they can move closer to having a drug that can control chronic conditions.

The drug, which is expected to have human trials within five years may not fully replace exercise but it could be an addition to the routines of exercise acting as a catalyst in creating more effect.
