Triggers prompt people to attempt suicide again
Hyderabad: The trigger that prompts a person to attempt suicide is a potential threat even after medication and therapy. Often it is observed that a completely treated person attempts suicide the second time, and successfully.
The reason is that he/she continues to remain in an environment where the triggers of his depression still exist. The triggers include monetary pressures, health and marital issues, alcoholism, drug abuse, among others.
“Many of them respond positively to therapy. Later, we hear that they had committed suicide. This is because the triggers of depression continue to exist and they are unable able to cope with them,” Dr Somesh G, senior psychiatrist, said.
Such cases are common people with marital problems and alcohol and drug abusers. Counsellors caution family members that the environment has to be altered to help the patient.
A senior counsellor explained, “We dealt with a very abusive couple where the man had failed to cope with marital issues. He attempted suicide twice. His parents moved out of the city with him, leaving behind friends and relatives. It was traumatic, but it was the only way to save their son. These are extremely tough choices as the entire family is totally affected.”
