Purists angry, no 'Beer Yoga' in Bengaluru

“Beer Yoga involves balancing the bottle during yoga poses and taking sips now and again while settling into different postures.

Bengaluru: Beer Yoga may have exploded on to the fitness scene both in the city and globally of late, but organisers of Bengaluru’s first Beer Yoga session at Sky Deck in the VR mall have called it off in the face of opposition from several yoga enthusiasts, who are against the mixing of alcohol with the traditional asanas.

The event, “Be Fit Bengaluru,” scheduled for June 25, was organised by city based fitness facilitator, Rapid Sports Fitness, Fresh Menu and the popular beer brand, Bira. The Rs 700 package offered one beer, Bira Light, with a meal box during the event which was to comprise a Zumba session, a CrossFit workout session and Beer Yoga, according to sources. Going by information on the tickets, Bira was to set up a bar at the mall for the yoga session.

The cancelled event had about 400 people interested in it and several fitness enthusiasts confess they were looking forward to it.

“Beer Yoga involves balancing the bottle during yoga poses and taking sips now and again while settling into different postures. It is actually quite relaxing and a great way to spend time socially,” said Mr Vishruti Bindal, a city based yoga enthusiast.

“I am so disappointed that this isn’t happening. It wasn’t overpriced and seemed like a reasonably good way to spend the weekend. To say that it would make us less traditional is ridiculous,” said Mr Gaurav Harish, another Beer Yoga fan.

“The whole point of yoga is to achieve peace and relaxation, so why make this an issue?” he asked.
