Peritoneal dialysis (PD) effective on women Chronic kidney patients

The prevalence of CKD is marginally more among women due to menstrual anomalies.

Chennai: Though chronic kidney disease (CKD) can be cured easily than other lifestyle diseases and its progression can be slowed with proper treatment procedures, dialysis has been the backbone for the treatment of CKD and peritoneal dialysis (PD) has emerged as the go-to treatment for patients, especially women.

The prevalence of CKD has increased by over 26 percent in 2016, from 1990 - according to the latest report titled India: Health of the Nation's States. The report further states that this sharp escalation of the disease is lesser only to other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and cerebrovascular disease.
Estimates reveal that almost 10 percent of the global population is suffering from CKD, including a large portion of women, with 1 out of 4 women falling victim to the disease. The prevalence of CKD is marginally more among women due to menstrual anomalies.

Considering that diabetes and high blood pressure make up for two-thirds of all CKD cases, this is certainly a cause of worry for women. This is because abdominal obesity is higher among women, which puts them at a greater risk of suffering from diabetes and hypertension.

“In this procedure, the abdominal lining of the patient is used to filter waste products from the blood. Over a period of time, peritoneal dialysis is gaining precedence as the primary means of treatment for women. The procedure can be administered at home, at the workplace, and even while travelling, thereby offering a better lifestyle for women, without the dependency of hospitals. Also, some training is all that is needed for the procedure to be performed easily by patients themselves in around 20-25 minutes for a single usage,” said Dr R. Balasubramaniyam, chief nephrologist, Kauvery Hospital.
