Bengaluru: Walkathon to mark World TB day
BENGALURU: On the eve of World TB day, St. Martha’s Hospital organised a massive walkathon to raise awareness about the disease, apart from a few other meticulously planned activities.
The event was intended to spread awareness about TB in an effective way. In addition to skits organized by the nursing students which were staged at prominent locations in the city, a writing competition was also held for students. With active participation from over 300 students and volunteers, the event created the desired impact.
World Tuberculosis Day, has been formulated to build public awareness about the global epidemic of Tuberculosis (TB) and the efforts to eliminate the disease. As per the WHO Global Tuberculosis report of 2015, TB ranks alongside HIV as the leading cause of death with about 1.5 million TB deaths recorded in 2014.
On the whole, there has been an overall drop of 47% in the TB death rate since 1990 and a whopping 43 million lives have been saved between 2000 and 2014 through effective diagnosis and treatment.
Jayakar Jerome, Director, St. Martha’s Hospital, says, "We hope that we can help contribute in raising awareness about TB and also in the efforts being taken to eradicate it. In line with our mission, it is definitely our contribution and an expression of our service to society”.
