Technopark gym to get a facelift

Authorities initiate renovation of facility in view of techies' complaints

Thiruvananthapuram: After the severe criticism from techies over the pathetic condition of the Technopark Clubhouse, the authorities are initiating a renovation of the facility. For quite some time, techies have been complaining of the lack of infrastructure, poor maintenance and unhygienic conditions at the clubhouse and the authorities ignored their concerns even as lifestyle diseases are on the rise among them. Many had even stopped using the facility given the pathetic condition.

Technopark chief executive officer Hrishikesh Nair said the woes of techies came to his notice recently and steps were already on to renovate the facility. “It is true that the clubhouse was not being maintained properly. We have already renovated the toilets in the swimming pool area, and work of maintenance of the health club equipment is on. The floor carpets would also be replaced. The renovation works will be over in a month or two,” he said. It became a point of discussion recently after a woman employee posted pictures of badly maintained equipment at the ladies health club.

“The 50,000 people of Technopark have this stinking place called the clubhouse, which has nothing but broken treadmills. Two of the four treadmills have not been working for a year now," wrote Anjana Gopinath, a senior employee of Technopark firm. "Dysfunctional machines, worn out carpets, soiled changing rooms, pathetic than most public comfort stations washrooms, broken wires all over the place and many other 'wonderful facilities'. No power backup for the machines, so that let people be thrown off the machines if power fails.”

“The swimming pools are not properly maintained. On two occasions I used the pool, and on both times I suffered infection,” said S. George, another employee. The concerns shared by the employees are quite right, admits Anoop Ambika, who is the secretary of the Technopark Club society. He, however, said that the club’s management was recently taken over by the Technopark authorities and hence the society had little role to play.
