Schools initiate steps to contain dengue impact ahead of quarterly exams

HYDERABAD: With quarterly exams round the corner, schools are taking steps to address growing concerns of parents surrounding dengue and other seasonal health issues that have cropped up.

The surge in cases of Dengue is spread by the bit of the Aedes aegypti mosquito that are active in the morning and in the evening, when students, especially those clad in short in the lower classes, are at school.

The surge in cases and fevers in the last few weeks has prompted educational institutions to prioritise health and safety of students, who, along with their parents, are being urged to also take preventive measures.

"To combat this rising threat, we are looking to collaborate with health authorities to create awareness about dengue prevention and other precautionary measures. We invited our alumnus Dr Shriya Kadamandla, who conducted a two-hour workshop on combating fevers and the importance of cleanliness," said Geetha Madhupriya, correspondent of a private school.

Health experts are expected to conduct similar workshops at various schools, especially with regard to dengue symptoms and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

Another teacher, Abhilash T, emphasised the importance of collective action.

"Our students' well-being is our priority. We have been educating them about the importance of maintaining clean surroundings, using mosquito repellents and wearing protective clothing, even when they step out to play. A collaborative effort involving teachers, parents and students can arrest the further spread," he said.

If stagnant water, which serves as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, is found inside the campuses and premises, it is being addressed promptly.

Aarti Reddy, principal of a private school, mentioned that they keep a close watch on students when they step out during recess, their habits during lunch break and in the classroom.

"While we are doing everything in our powers to protect our students, the monsoon season poses a significant challenge. We urge parents to support us by reinforcing these preventive measures at home as well in order to avoid any scope for absenteeism," she added.
