Parkinson's severity treated by rare surgery

Hospital authorities said that he was initially put on good dose of medicines but was not effective.

CHENNAI: A 43-year-old man from Kerala suffering from severe tremulousness of his left hand underwent a Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery (DBS) at New Hope Medical Centre in Chennai. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a chronic ailment of the brain that affected his body movements causing difficulty in walking and also writing.

Hospital authorities said that he was initially put on good dose of medicines but was not effective. "The effect of the medicine lasted just an hour. Higher doses of medicines brought in side effects. A 12-hour DBS surgery done with the patient fully awake and his limbs shaking," said doctors.

The number of patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in India is around 3.9 million, however, Parkinson’s disease can be treated with medicines but surgery, where micro electrodes are placed in the brain, say doctors.
