Chennai: Complex surgery performed at government hospital
CHENNAI: Dilip (19) was brought to Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH) on September 4 with complaints of abdominal pain for last six months. It was identified after subsequent scans including X-ray, endoscopy and CT scan that he had swallowed five needles owing to his behavioral disorder.
The patient was operated upon for three hours, that involved removal of three needles from stomach, one from liver and one from intestine. A laproscopy was done after administrating anesthesia.
“X-ray revealed the presence of five sharp objects in the patients’ stomach. After endoscopy, it was found that the needles had migrated to liver and intestines over a period of six months. Through laproscopy, we were able to find the location of the needles,” said Dr L. Anand, professor, gastrointestinal and liver surgery department, GRH.
He added that the needles were removed by making a hole in the stomach of the patient and taken off the stomach first, followed by liver and intestine. The boy was recommended for psychiatric treatment post surgery on September 7. Psychiatrists said he is expected to be discharged on Sunday.
