Mobile towers have no effect on health: Experts

TERM officials conduct awareness session for corporators

KOZHIKODE: A national electromagnetic frequency (EMF) web portal would soon carry the database of all operational mobile towers and their radio frequency radiation levels. Telecom Enforcement, Resource and Monitoring (TERM) officials announced this during an awareness session on mobile radiation for the corporators here on Monday. T. Sreenivasan, director of telecom enforcement resources, said it would alleviate all worries of EMF radiation.

"Even Kerala High Court has found no evidence that it affected people’s health and ruled that installation of new network towers meeting all necessary regulations and standards could not be stopped," he said. "The public is free to approach the district level Trai officials to remove their doubts or express grievances. We have also asked the collector, who is also the chairman of the district telecom committee, to publish the minutes on the official website."

The district now has 1057 mobile towers, nearly 200 of them in the city. “After conducting inspections, no violation of TRAI Act was found," he said. “The entire issue cropped up when some people made a correlation between an incidence of cancer and telecom towers without any basis." Protests had hit setting up of mobile towers on buildings in cities.
