Stem cell therapy to treat skin diseases

Nail colour indicative of many diseases that affect internal organs: Expert.

KOCHI: Prof. Dr Giovanni Pellacani, president, World Congress Dermatology says that latest findings in stem cell therapy are effective in tackling genetic skin diseases. At the 46th national conference of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL), DERMACON 2018, he said many successful research works had been done in stem cell treatment recently which are being eagerly looked into by other medical disciplines.

In the lecture held in memory of Ambadi Bhaskara Menon, a pioneer academician in the state in dermatology, Dr Chander Grover, professor of dermatology, Delhi University College of Medical Sciences and founder secretary of Nail Society of India said the symptoms of many diseases that affect the internal organs and metabolism can be identified from nail colour. She also stressed on the need of using moisturizer to avoid dryness and shedding of skin around the nails. She highlighted that one needs to be careful about not cutting nails too close to the skin as it can cause damage to the skin.

She asked people doing manicure and pedicure in beauty parlours to trim the nails a bit away from the skin. High-heeled footwear will also alter the angle of the foot to the ground, exerting pressure on the toes and are a threat to the nails, she added.

“Diapers of babies and kids should be changed within three to four hours of use, and their private parts should be washed and kept clean, and moisture-free and new diapers should be used only after that. Otherwise, it will cause infections in babies”, said Dr Vineetha Vargheese Panicker, another dermatologist. She also added that teenagers should not be afraid and cautious of pimples and that it will go away after twenty years of age and if the problem persists, they should consult a doctor to avoid getting infections and pimple marks.
