Yin& Yang: Men, don't fret over semen

People believe the semen's preservation guarantees health and longevity.

Sunith got worried about the black circles around his eyes and loss of weight. He thought that losing semen in sleep is the cause for all this. He consulted a quack who pronounced that he will end up with impotence, if he continues to lose semen either through masturbation or in sleep The quack is exploiting an age old belief that semen is precious.

Many people falsely believe that a hundred drops of blood make one drop of semen. People believe the semen’s preservation guarantees health and longevity. Others believe that loss of semen robs the body of its vital breath and losing semen amounts to losing the vital spirits. When such people find themselves losing their semen, they are emotionally distressed and experience a plethora of complaints, exhaustion, weakness, dryness of the body, emaciation, sunken eyes, sleeplessness, etc.

But what they don’t realise is that there is no scientific basis to these beliefs. Whatever food we eat is broken down into simpler compounds by our digestive system. These components travel through the blood stream to different parts of the body to nourish them. When the prostrate, testes and the seminal vesicles are properly nourished, they will function adequately by secreting their glandular secretions. When these secretions combine together semen is formed. Thus it’s obvious that there is no direct correlation between the quantity of semen and quantity of blood. What is passed along with urine is secretions of the urethral glands. So, remember:

  • The production of semen is an unending process except when there is an infection, injury or both.
  • Semen can’t be stored in body beyond a point. It’s meant to be sent out.
  • Semen’s value is only for producing a child, nothing more.
  • Semen and urine can’t mix unless there is a defect in the valve in the urogenital tract.
