International Yoga Day: Bengaluru refreshes body, mind

Bengaluru: The International Day of Yoga in the city was celebrated at Kanteerava Stadium. Bollywood star Bipasha Basu was the chief guest, while Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Union Law Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda and others attended the event.

Bipasha Basu said that yoga helps people to be active the whole day and refreshes the mind and body. Mr Siddaramaiah said that yoga is good to keep diseases away.
The rope trick
One of the highlights of International Yoga Day celebrations in the city was Rope Yoga by Mahavatar group, Brookefields. Ayurveda expert Dr Sanjeev Naik said the rope yoga, which is considered the mother of all yoga props, was founded by B.K.S. Iyengar. He popularised it as those who were nervous of practicing inversions could use rope as a tool to access a variety of inversion postures without putting any weight on their hands, arms, or heads, he said.

LGBT community joins in
Over 80 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community members participated in a yoga event organised by Ambika C. Jagadeesh of yoga4all group. They performed meditation, pranayama and laughing therapy.

Blind students do their bit
CII-Young Indians organised ‘Inclusive Yoga’ at the M.G. Road Metro Boulevard. Seventeen visually Impaired youth took part in the session along with 75 others, including students from Sankara College of Optometry, members of Young Indians Bengaluru, CII and Samarthanam Trust.

Mr Diwakar, Asst Principal Sankara College of Optometry, said that the International Day of Yoga has put international focus on the ancient form of exercise. “Some of us blindfolded ourselves and depended on our friends to guide us. This made our students aware of the importance of vision,” he said.
