Nipah virus: Well, the epicenter

The health workers have found bats, both dead and alive in the well on Monday.

KOZHIKODE: Health minister K.K Shylaja has said that the well at the household of Valachuketty Moosa at Soopikada in Panthirikara is the probable epicenter of the Nipah epidemic. The health workers have found bats, both dead and alive in the well on Monday. Moosa’s two sons, Sabith and Salih died due to Nipah and he is in critical condition at a private hospital in Kozhikode. “A net has been spread across the well to catch the bats and send them for examination,” said Mrs Shylaja.

It is learned that Sabith and Salih had got down to the well to clean it before the commencement of monsoon. The minister appealed to the public that the virus is not contagious through the atmosphere but through swabs and serums. “All precautions have been put in place. Contacts of the afflicted should be on alert. They are on constant observation,” she assured.
