Low levels of thyroid hormones linked to chronic fatigue syndrome: Study
A new study has found low levels of thyroid hormones could be the reason for developing chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), the Daily Mail reported.
Some experts are sceptic and dismiss the information. They believe the cause is psychological. However, people who suffer the debilitating condition believe it to be biological.
For the study, Dutch researchers examined more than a hundred adults that believe it is a physical problem. Thyroid function was compared between 98 CFS patients and 97 healthy adults.
The results revealed CFS patients had lower serum levels of triiodothyronine and thyroxine, which are two key hormones.
Currently, there is not cure and medications, graded exercise therapy And cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) are the only treatment options.
Scientists hope their findings will allow doctors to not recommend treatments like psychologists to treat the condition.
The study was originally published in the journal Frontiers in Endocrinology.
