Viral fever on the rise in Kochi
KOCHI: With the change in climate, the number of fever cases reported from various parts of the district is showing a gradual increase. During the last couple of weeks, more fever cases have been reported both in rural and urban areas in Ernakulam, according to Health Department statistics. As per the Heath department, as many as 676 fever cases were reported from various parts of the district on Tuesday including a confirmed and a suspected case of dengue and also a suspected case of leptospirosis. The confirmed dengue fever has been reported from Elamkunnapuzha near Vypeen.
“Though there is no epidemic-like situation in any part of the district, fever cases are showing an upward trend,” said district medical officer Dr. N.K Kuttappan. However, compared to some other districts, the situation is better in Ernakulam. A very high number of fever cases are reported from Malappuram (1083) and Thiruvananthapuram (831) including confirmed cases of dengue and leptospirosis. “After a long gap, the OP section in the hospital has witnessed an increase in the number of fever patients in the last couple of days,” said Dr Sunil P.K, secretary of the Kerala Government Medical Officers Association, Ernakulam.
Fever cases and skin allergies due to dust and hot weather are the major illnesses reported now, according to doctors at primary healthcare centres in rural areas and private hospitals in urban areas. Meanwhile, Health Department authorities are reviewing the situation regularly and plans are afoot to implement programmes to prevent the outbreak of summer diseases during the hot months.
