Telangana: 4-year-old has half-matched stem cell transplant
Hyderabad: A four-year-old child suffering from Fanconi Anemia underwent a half-matched stem cell transplant at a private hospital in the city. Fanconi Anemia is one of the very rare diseases and one in four lakh people are affected with it. The child was suffering from multiple ailments since birth. However, recently his drop in blood levels lead to doctors identifying the disease.
Dr A.V.S. Suresh, senior consultant medical oncologist, said, “The disease afflicted the child much earlier. It has led to weakness, bleeding, recurrent infections and growth disorders. In the present set up, stem cell transplant is the current standard and only curative option.” Since there was no match from the registries and cord, doctors opted for the best half-match from the father with a different blood group.
