GHMC tells citizens to join fight on mosquitoes

The GHMC has deployed four teams with 126 workers to control breeding of mosquitoes at in and around the Musi.

Hyderabad: With anti-larval operations, fogging and mosquito repellent plants not working to beat the mosquito menace, the GHMC is now urging people to solve the problem.

The city has recorded 1,224 cases of malaria so far this year. For an area of 625 sq. km, the GHMC has just a handful of staff and, on World Mosquito Day, sought the help of stakeholders to tackle the menace.

Dr C. Srinivasulu, assistant professor department of zoology, OU, said, the mosquito menace in urban areas was the outcome of human callousness.

“Most of us blame the government and municipal administration for the nuisance. The onus is on the citizens to keep the surroundings clean and hygienic to keep mosquitoes and vector borne diseases at bay. The government should take steps to formulate a comprehensive master plan to address this issue.”

GHMC commissioner Dr B. Janardhan Reddy pointed out that a mosquito in its lifetime of 20 days produces 1,000 mosquitoes which within two months spawn lakhs of mosquitoes. He said controlling the mosquito menace was not only the duty of the GHMC but of the citizens too.

The GHMC has deployed 642 teams and every day around 1.4 lakh houses are covered by anti-larva operations. The GHMC has deployed four teams with 126 workers to control breeding of mosquitoes at in and around the Musi. The GHMC conducts fogging 130 areas every day, to control mosquitoes.
