Brucellosis attack: AWBI withdraws permission to transport infected cows

The order also said that the no-objection letter sent to the KVASU on September 15 would be cancelled.

Thrissur: Taking a complete u-turn from its earlier position, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) on Monday issued a fresh order withdrawing the permission given to transport the Brucellosis-infected cattle from its Livestock Research Station in Thiruvazhamkunnu in Palakkad to Mannuthy in Thrissur for mass culling and burial. In the latest order, the board said that after a careful study of provisions of Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious diseases in Animals Act, 2009, (PCICDA), it has reached a conclusion that the law did not allow for the infected live or dead animal to be taken out of the specified area in Palakkad.

The order also said that the no-objection letter sent to the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) on September 15 would be cancelled. AWBI had sent no-objection letter to the varsity after KVASU explained the measures to cull the animals by bringing them in special covered vehicles designed exclusively for the safe transport of infected animals to Mannuthy from Palakkad. It is learnt that the animal activist based in Thrissur took up the matter with ABWI and pointed out the legal oversight. This has prompted the board to take a u-turn in the issue.
