Watch: Here's what sugar does to your brain

This video by Ted Ed's Nicole Avena will give you a fair idea about what makes the sweet stuff so appealing to your body.

Thanks to the mass influx of cheap processed foods in modern supermarkets, nearly every food item is sure to contain sugar – so-called health food included. But have you ever wondered what happens to your brain when you bite into that sugary snack? This video by Ted Ed’s Nicole Avena will give you a fair idea about what makes the sweet stuff so appealing to your body.

The thing is that whenever we consume a food item that contains sugar, the body releases dopamine, which is a chemical that is activated by pleasurable experiences. One must note that this same chemical can be triggered by drugs, social experiences and sex. This is why eating chocolate makes you feel so good.

Now eating sugary foods in large quantities make your dopamine levels get high instantly. This feel-good rush is the same offered by any other drug. In other words, sugar craving is eerily similar to drug addiction.
