Surgery for epilepsy is one way out

Epilepsy is the most common neurological condition and it occurs in 4-10 in 1,000 persons.

Nellore: Epilepsy surgery is a way out for patients with uncontrolled seizures. Surgery may help 30 per cent of the people with epilepsy whose seizures are not controlled with treatment. Epilepsy surgery is a highly specialised procedure is performed at few centres. The option of surgery is considered only it is thought that it will be effective. This is considered in people whose seizures can be shown to arise in one area of the brain. Over 70 per cent of people who undergo epilepsy surgery, become completely seizure free, said Dr S. Sita Jayalakshmi, senior consultant neurologist, Special Interest-Epilepsy, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences.

The success of modern surgery for epilepsy has caused a widespread interest in this type of treatment. In children with uncontrolled epilepsy there is a delay in milestone and language development and poor scholastic performance. Early surgery in children with uncontrolled epilepsy helps not only in the control of seizures but improves the quality of life.
