Trained nurses can actually help people quit smoking: study
Quitting smoking can be a long struggle and can be worse for those who smoke too much, which is why anyone trying to quit smoking can use some help and a study now claims that such an approach actually works for a lot of people.
The study points out that a lot of smokers found it easier to quit when they were helped by nurses and other staff members who were actually trained for counselling them.
Researchers suggested that a time when a person is hospitalised is the best time to get them to quit since the motivation towards personal health is more and a nurse can explain the effects of smoking effectively.
16.5% of 1528 participants in the study ended up quitting smoking after coming out of intervention hospitals while only 5.7% quit smoking after leaving other hospitals. Even lab tested quit rates showed a two fold difference.
The research said that many patients start smoking immediately after leaving the hospital and introducing them to a quitting plan can actually help their chances of succeeding.
