Experts to discuss high cost of diabetes therapy
Thiruvananthapuram: Experts will discuss the rising cost of treating diabetes and explore effective solution to the problem during the International Diabetes meet here on August 21. The biggest concern for the policy makers and the public about diabetes was the high cost of therapy. As the disease affects vital organs like kidney, heart, liver and eyes, the escalation of the treatment cost could be even ten-fold.
According to doctors, most lower middle class families’ spend close to 70 per cent of their income for treating diabetes and associated complications. The panel of doctors from all over the country belonging to private, public sector and policy makers will take part in the panel discussion on the issue to be held at the Annual Diabetes Global Convention 2016 organised by Jothydev’s Professional Education Forum here on August 21 .
Experts say the best way is to prevent the onset of diabetes by maintaining a healthy life style. Another method to check the cost escalation in diabetes treatment is to prevent complications associated with organs which can be achieved with the help of proper health education, medical advise and regular treatment.
They urged the policy makers to rationalise the prices of drugs meant for diabetes treatment. Most of the cost effective drugs available in the markets are actually highly expensive and the government needs to take steps to provide such medicines at a subsidised rate. The treatment should be individualised, based on the patient requirement and considering their job, age, education and mental status.
