Faulty drug spotted in Warangal

Crystallisation shows that the drug is not safe and must not be used.

Hyderabad: Pentothal sodium, which is used by the anaesthesia department in injections, developed crystals as a result of contamination at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Warangal. Hospital doctors took a video and sent it to the director of health and medical education and the Telangana Government Doctors Association.

Dr Ramesh of the association said, “Pentothal sodium is supplied in powder form and has to be mixed in distilled water. When it was mixed in water it developed crystals which shows that it is not of good quality and there is contamination. The video was taken by the doctors from the hospital and sent to us.”

Crystallisation shows that the drug is not safe and must not be used. Pentothal sodium has to dissolve properly, which did not happen. The drug was manufactured by Kwality Pharmaceutical Limited from Amritsar and batch number was 7519, doctors said.

Director of health and medical education Dr M. Ramani was apprised of the situation. The doctors wanted the evidence submitted to the government demanding action against Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation over such issues.
