Adolescent and behavioural psychology along with infertility and contraception were among the major health issues in 2017.

CHENNAI: Adolescent and behavioural psychology along with infertility and contraception were among the major health issues in 2017 that saw a phenomenal growth in terms of interactions with doctors in Chennai, as per the recent annual report by Lybrate Healthscape India.

Post analysis of around 80 million health-related interactions last year in Chennai revealed there was 290 per cent increase in interactions on infertility and contraception, while a spike of 265 per cent was seen in interactions on adolescent and behavioural psychology when compared to 2016.

Though 29 per cent of all health-related interactions were on diabetes that leads the burden of non-communicable diseases in the city, 27 per cent were on infertility and contraception, 23 per cent on Vitamin D and B12 deficiency and 21 per cent on hypertension.

A surge in queries on mental health issues was also witnessed that included consultations on behavioural changes, frustration and anger, hypersensitivity, managing relationship issues, managing stress and depression. Parents actively began to seek to counsel for themselves and their children after incidences of Blue Whale challenge and child sexual abuse made headlines, said the report.

Talking about the trend of mental health issues raised in the city, Saurabh Arora, founder, Lybrate, said that people are keen about being psychologically healthy and it becomes significant because parents are seeking help for their children and themselves to connect with each other better and fix any behavioral issue.

“We ignore our psychological health, not understanding that it is key to our overall good health. Being psychologically healthy saves us from a gamut of lifestyle-triggered diseases that have become a major concern for people across age-groups as also healthcare infrastructure in the country,” he added.
